Safe Driving Habits
Wear a seat belt
- Amazingly, approximately only 81% of people in the U.S. use a seat belt when driving. Seat belts
reduce serious injury by 50% and reduce fatalities by 60-70%.
Vehicle Adjustments
- Adjust all mirrors and your seat before you start to drive. This is especially important if you are not the only driver.
- Adjust radio / CD / MP3 before you start to drive.
Complete cell phone calls before you start to drive
- You are four times more likely to be in a car accident using your cell phone.
Do not drive while you are distracted
- Talking to a passenger can be as distracting as a cell phone. Remember to look at the road, the cars / pedestrians around you,
and your controls; not your passengers.
- Never drive when you are distracted by your emotions. In 2003, AAA estimated that about 31% of auto accidents were caused by drivers who were
emotionally distracted.
Drive defensively
- The number one rule of defensive driving is to anticipate what could happen and protect yourself from other drivers and their possible actions.
Watch for pedestrians
- One pedestrian is killed by an auto every 107 minutes and one is injured every 6 minutes! The victims are usually children and the elderly.
Do not speed
- Driving over the speed limit usually only saves you one to five minutes during a normal day. Is that one to five minutes worth a $100.00 ticket?
Also remember that if you are stopped by an officer, you can automatically add about ten minutes to your arrival time.
Never Drive when you are drowsy
- Approximately 1550 fatalities and 71,000 injuries are caused by falling asleep at the wheel each year.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- In 2002, approximately 41% of fatal car accidents involved alcohol or drug use.
- In the state of Ohio, a DUI can result in up to 5 years of jail time, a $250 to $10,000 fine, probation, drug and alcohol
counseling, and suspension of your drivers license. You will also be required to carry an SR-22 bond for proof of financial
responsibility.
Check prescription drug warning labels before driving
- Many prescription medications cause drowsiness or other side effects that can cause you to be too impaired to drive. Remember that you can
also get arrested for driving under the influence for driving while taking certain medications.
